"National Doughnut Day is not a creation of the snack-food industry but actually started in 1938 as a fund-raiser for the Salvation Army. Women of that organization started America's complicated love affair with the doughnut during World War I. As part of their effort to bring a little bit of home to U.S. troops in France, the Salvation Army served coffee and doughnuts. We couldn't confirm that the doughnuts were actually fried in metal helmets, but it makes a nice story."
Famous Salvation Army Doughboy Doughnut
7-1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup lard
8 eggs
3 large cans evaporated milk
3 large cans water
18 cups flour
18 teaspoons baking powder
7-1/2 teaspoons salt
8 teaspoons nutmeg

Cream sugar and lard together, beat eggs, add evaporated milk and water. Add liquid to creamed mixture. Mix flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg in large sieve and sift into other mixture. Add enough flour to make e stiff dough. Roll and cut. Five pounds of lard are required to fry the doughnuts. Yield: approximately 250 doughnuts

I don't think any of us will use that recipe but it is interesting and I love food history.

Krispy Kreme: All customers receive a free doughnut. No purchase necessary.
Dunkin' Donuts: Free doughnut with the purchase of a beverage.
LaMar's: All customers receive a free Ray's Original Glazed doughnut. No purchase necessary.
Shipley Do-Nuts: Free glazed doughnut with purchase until noon
LaMar's is where SLK takes the grands in the mornings after a sleep over. Good stuff.

I love La Mar's, but I never knew they gave you a doughnut for free! I did know that about Krispy Kreme's though. My favorite doughnut shop is in WV, where I grew up. It's open 24 hours and has one of the few (La Mar's has these too) cream filled bar doughnuts. Love the history, thanks!
