Oh What Do You Do In the Summertime

Here's a few ideas from my past with either sisters or you six darling children. Plan and be organized. This can turn into thee best summer.

Make homemade ice cream. Really very easy and you can purchase inexpensive ice cream makers at Wally's or Tar.get. Let me know if you want my mom's peach ice cream recipe.

I've already picked up two puzzles for the grands to do. One is a puzzle of the country with the pieces in the shapes of the states...multiple learning going on there.

Jody and I would type up our own charts on the old, nonelectric typewriter. I'm sure we gave ourselves more chores than Mom would have. Images, graphics & stickers are all good. I always wanted the gold star for the middle of my forehead. I'm Indian I think.

Kids love to cook/bake. I made many fun things from this old cookbook. You could even sew aprons to match. You know I'm an apron geek.

Swim at Grammy's. The AZ heat makes summer more challenging than other locations by a long shot. This is grand J last summer.

Read, read, read. Pick a long series that goes all summer. You kids loved the Little House series.

Factor in regular, scheduled nap/rest time. Everyone will be much happier. Lack of sleep and food = the grouchies. You're lucky if you have a critter to cuddle with!

Climb trees...just don't spit on your sibling below :) or fall and break your body.

Weave something. Go here for a fun, easy project & directions.

Go through fun kid magazines, especially The Friend. Find the "hidden pictures" was and is still a big favorite.

Turn anyone into an artist with paint by number kits. You'll treasure this artwork forever. The kits come at all age/skill levels.

Play games, Pick Up Sticks . . .

. . . Jacks . . .

Old Maid . . . or our girlhood favorite. . .

. . . Author's!!!! I must see if I can get this on eBay or something. I need it again.

Build a tent either with chairs or

on a clothesline. This one is pretty sophisticated!!

Go weekly to the library and join the reading program. Lookie, lookie, I found a picture of the Orego.n City library. Didn't we spend wonderful time there!!! Took our lunch, played on the swings and water fountain and yes went inside and checked out books. Good-old-days for sure.

Teach something new, how to correctly set the table. Kids could make their own mats by tracing around silverware, dishes and glasses. BTW, I put my glass at the top of the knife, what about you?

Hooray for oscillating sprinklers that water a large patch of lawn and keep those precious grands cool and busy.

Find an easy recipe and make taffy. Cool first, butter up those little hands and pull, pull, pull. Then cut or twist into shape, wrap in wax paper. Best candy. Carmels or easy and fun too.

There are so many websites for ideas, not just my oldies. This is a good one http://familyfun.go.com/ . Hang in there parents. Have fun too. Make things easy. Use paper plates occasionally. Let the bread machine do all the work. Take lots of pictures because these days will pass faster than you can realize now and you will look back and hope you made the most, the best of them. 3
